Most recruiters want one page. That is usually 250–400 words. A 900-word letter is a second resume and often goes unread.

A practical range

250–400 words, three short paragraphs: why this role, one proof story, availability. Academic jobs sometimes allow two pages — only if the advert says so. Count words, then look at the PDF: if it spills to page two with normal margins, cut.

Count the letter, not the resume

Paste only the letter into the Resume Word Counter (or Word Counter). Do not mix the CV. If an ATS form has a 2000-character field, switch to the Character Counter instead.
