How to count words in an essay
Most classrooms count whitespace-separated tokens. Headers, footnotes, and bibliographies may be excluded — ask. Then paste the body into a counter instead of highlighting in a word processor with hidden comments.
What to paste
Title (if it counts), body paragraphs, quotations. Strip comments and tracked changes. If the brief says “excluding references,” do not paste the works cited. The Essay Word Counter splits on whitespace like most LMS paste fields.
In-text citations
“(Smith, 2020)” usually counts as words. If your marker wants those excluded, delete them in a copy before counting. Keep the original file untouched.
