Meta description length
Google rewrites many descriptions. You still write one: it is the fallback snippet and it trains internal authors. Aim for about 140–160 characters, not 320.
Pixels, not a hard cap
Desktop snippets truncate around 150–160 characters; mobile can cut earlier. Wide letters (W, M) eat pixels. Count characters, then look at a search preview if you have one. Do not stuff the keyword three times.
What to put in those characters
One outcome, one audience, one next step. Example: “Count words and characters in the browser. No account.” Paste into the Character Counter and stop at ~155.
Steps
- Write one sentence plus a short benefit.
- Count characters with spaces.
- Trim to about 155, then paste into the meta tag.
