How long a password should be

Length beats a short password with a symbol sprinkled in. For a generated secret, 16+ random characters is a sensible default; passphrases can be longer and easier to type.

Generated vs memorable

Site limits

Some banks still cap at 12–16 characters or ban certain symbols. Generate, then if the site rejects it, lower length or symbol set — do not append your pet’s name.
